Induction / training at Speak Like A Native

Working as a Language Guide for Speak Like A Native is ideal for someone who is responsible and able to manage a room full of children or adults, while being aware of the needs of the group and the individuals. Language Guides represent Speak Like A Native and are required to follow the method and session plans in the manual. The nature of the work, which is mainly after-school clubs, means that it suits someone looking for part-time work or a person aiming to build their CV in order to work in education. Speak Like A Native is keen to be part of the process that helps people reach their long term aim of working full-time in a school. There is ongoing training and development for all Language Guides and the opportunity to become a Trainer and help those less experienced.

Speak Like A Native clubs follow our Guided Language Participation method. The concept is that our employees are a guide (not a teacher) and lead the children/adults through a series of fun and meaningful games, tasks and activities. The role of the children/adults is to participate. This way of learning mirrors the natural way we acquire our first language.

For the Language Guide this means you must speak 90% of the time in the target language. The children/adults can respond in English. There is no homework and no lists of words to learn. The aim is always to engage children/adults in something fun and make language learning a positive and rewarding exercise.

    You will need to:

    • Speak the Target Language fluently
    • Speak English with confidence
    • Be responsible - classroom management, Health & Safety, Safeguarding
    • Be fun – all sessions are about the children/adults having a great time
    • Be organised – keeping registers and reports
    • Be a good timekeeper – sessions must start and end on time
    • Be an open learner – all Language Guides must be open to new ideas and development

You do not need to be a qualified teacher but experience working with children/adults is essential.
