Residence

The departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Brexit) will have consequences for the majority of nationals of the United Kingdom residing in Spain as well as for their family members.

For the Government of Spain, the issue of citizens’ rights has been, throughout the negotiations, one of the main priorities: Spain is the country of residence of the largest community of nationals of the United Kingdom in Europe and a significant number of Spaniards reside in the United Kingdom.

The Government of Spain has worked and will continue to work in order to offer maximum legal security to nationals of the United Kingdom residing in Spain and who, after Brexit, wish to continue residing in Spain. The aim will be to ensure that, in any scenario, nationals of the United Kingdom residing in Spain and their family members can continue studying, working and residing in Spain as they did before Brexit.

Similarly, we will continue to work to ensure that Spaniards resident in the United Kingdom enjoy full legal security and that their rights are not affected as much as possible by this situation.
