IS SOCIAL ECONOMY

The Asociación Empresarial para la Discapacidad (AEDIS), or Business Association for the Disabled, is promoted by Plena Inclusión for the representation and defence of the rights of those bodies dedicated to the provision of support, assistance, education, training and labour integration services for persons with disabilities.

AEDIS brings together 219 different entities from across Spain, and represents 417 associations and companies that provide services to persons with disabilities in residential homes, day centres, occupational centres and special employment centres employing over 36,950 people, of whom 12,810 are disabled workers in special employment centres.

AEDIS is committed to promoting organisational change and development through legal and technical assistance for its members, promoting activities and training plans that foster organisational learning. The association also calls for the employment of persons with disabilities by promoting quality employment and supporting projects to create, maintain and improve employment, while also time promoting innovation and business development processes for synergies, efficiency, excellence and sustainability. The association also advocates on behalf of its members, defending and promoting their employment, economic and social interests, as well as negotiating and agreeing with the social partners on general frameworks of reference for labour relations and collective bargaining agreements.

The Asociación Española de Recuperadores de Economía Social y Solidaria (AERESS) is the national platform representing operators in the social and solidarity economy dedicated to reuse, repair and recycling. It advocates for greater public recognition of social inclusion and the waste recovery sector while working to strengthen the social stakeholders and the platform itself.

AERESS's mission is to advocate for and promote organisations that work for the social inclusion of those who suffer from, or at risk of, social exclusion, as well as environmental management and waste recovery work. It also works to spread awareness about prevention, reuse and recycling of waste. All of this is in line with the principles of the social economy, upon which AERESS endeavours to achieve its objectives. Its values are:

  • The fight for environmental protection and against social exclusion.
  • Respect for the autonomy of social entities.
  • The six principles set out in the "Charter of principles of the solidarity economy" are: equity, decent work, cooperation, ecological sustainability, fair distribution of wealth and commitment to the environment.

The Confederación Española de Mutualidades (CEM), the Spanish Confederation of Mutual Societies, is the highest representative body of the social welfare mutual insurance system in Spain. It is made up of more than 223 entities, representing more than two million members and managing assets of over 46.7 million euros. Its purpose is to represent, defend and promote the interests of the social welfare mutual insurance bodies. It promotes the development of Social Welfare, as well as mutual insurance as a complementary welfare system.

The Confederación Empresarial Española de Economía Social (CEPES), the Spanish Social Economy Business Confederation, was established in 1992, and is a business association of nationwide scope representing the social economy in Spain. The Confederation actively participates in the construction of public and social policies, with the aims of facilitating the modernisation of social enterprises and their response to the challenges they face, as well as contributing to the economic development of the country in the interests of stability and pluralism in economic markets.

CEPES is currently made up of 32 organisations. All of them are state or regional confederations and specific business groups, representing the interests of cooperatives, labour societies, mutual societies, workplace insertion companies, special employment centres, fishers’ guilds and disability associations, with more than 200 support structures at regional level.

The International Centre for Research and Information on the Public, Social and Cooperative Economy (CIRIEC) is an international non-governmental scientific organisation. Its objectives include the promotion of information research, scientific research and dissemination of work on public companies and social economy entities such as cooperatives, worker-owned companies, mutual societies, special employment centres and other social enterprises, foundations and associations. CIRIEC-International was created in 1947, while CIRIEC-Spain was constituted as an association in 1986, and is a full member of CIRIEC-International.

One of the most remarkable projects of CIRIEC-Spain is the creation of the Spanish Social Economy Observatory in 2005. This Observatory has enabled new research to be carried out and disseminated, as well as weekly and monthly electronic newsletters and legal developments to be sent out.

The Confederación Española de Cooperativas de Trabajo Asociado (COCETA), or Confederation of Worker's Cooperatives, aims to give visibility and improve Worker Cooperativism. Active for 36 years, there are currently 15 organisations that make up this Confederation, representing 17,792 workers’ cooperatives, with more than 315,748 permanent and quality jobs. These companies are present in all productive sectors and boast 51% female representation in their workforces, including senior leadership positions, with flexibility and work-life balance.

The Confederación de Cooperativas de Viviendas y Rehabilitación de España (CONCOVI), the Spanish Confederation of Housing and Refurbishment Cooperatives, remains the only state organisation for housing cooperatives in Spain since it was founded in 1988.

Its main objective is to represent the affiliated co-operative organisations at national (and international) level, defending their general interests before the Organisations and Institutions of the General State Administration and collaborating with the social partners for this purpose.

Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de España, or Agrifood Cooperatives of Spain, is the representative body for the Spanish agri-food cooperative movement, advocating before national and European bodies, institutions and associations in agri-food sector and the social economy.

This organisation focuses on people, with a pyramid organisational structure, the base of which is composed of the members of the cooperatives, farmers and livestock breeders; with the second layer is made up of the cooperative companies; the third representing the federations and regional bodies and cooperatives of which the cooperatives are member; and the top layer representing the national organisation. In this way, the needs of the entire cooperative collective are met, from the base and the raison d'être of the organisation itself, right up to the top.

Its mission as an organisation is “to promote, represent and structure the Spanish agri-food cooperative movement, promoting an important, professional business cooperative model that generates value and is competitive, and which contributes to improving the profitability of member farmers and livestock farmers and to the sustainable development of the agri-food sector and the rural environment". In conclusion, the aim of the Organisation is to improve the conditions in which cooperatives do business.

The Coordinadora Estatal de Comercio Justo ( CECJ) is the national fair trade coordination body, a platform that brings together organisations involved in the fair trade movement, currently 31 (25 member organisations and 6 collaborating partners). Its work focuses on promoting this alternative and solidarity-based trade system, providing services to member organisations. It is a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). Its aim is to transform the social reality and the rules of international trade by influencing public policies, raising awareness and mobilising society and strengthening the Fair Trade sector.

All CECJ activity is framed within the Education for Development Strategy in which the different lines of action are targeted at generating a vision of global citizenship through knowledge, awareness and citizen commitment by disseminating the principles and values of Fair Trade and its specific contribution to the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals. The CECJ's action strategy is set out in the annual work plan, which is drawn up by consensus among the member organisations and democratically approved by the Assembly.

The Federación de Asociaciones Empresariales de Empresas de Inserción (FAEDEI) or Federation of Insertion Company Business Associations, is a group of regional associations of insertion companies with the aim of promoting, strengthening and giving visibility to the insertion company model as the best tool for social and labour inclusion for persons suffering from, or at risk of, social exclusion.

FAEDEI promotes the creation and maintenance of insertion companies, considering that, through their training and insertion itineraries, insertion companies constitute a means for the implementation of active employment policies. FAEDEI aims to promote the social economy through insertion enterprises, improving the social, collaborative and green economy.

The Federación Empresarial Española de Asociaciones de Centros Especiales de Empleo (FEACEM) is a non-profit federation with a national scope and a cross-sectoral character. It represents and defends the interests of its member business associations in order to improve the sector of special employment centres.

It brings together 16 business associations, integrating and representing more than 650 special employment centres in the social economy, on whose behalf it engages in dialogue with public administrations, social stakeholders and society in general.

A non-profit organisation representing fishers' guilds throughout the country, founded with the aim of protecting and preserving the rights and interests of fishers, as well as improving their working conditions. It collaborates with both local and national governments, as well as with fisheries and environmental organisations.

Its 198 fishers’ guild members are distributed among the following Autonomous Communities: Catalonia has 20 guilds, the Balearic Islands 16, Valencia 19, Murcia 4, Andalusia 12, Galicia 49, Asturias 15, Cantabria 1, the Canary Islands 3 and 20 provincial fishers’ guild federations, representing more than 10,000 vessels, mainly dedicated to inshore fishing. The members of the guilds are small vessel owners and fishers who pay contributions under the Special Regime for the Sea, in total amounting to more than 30,000 members, 8,000 of whom are vessel owners.

The Confederación Española de Cooperativas de Consumidores y Usuarios (HISPACOOP) brings together and coordinates consumer cooperatives in Spain and advocates on their behalf before various national and international institutions. It carries out its activity in two ways: by exercising a cooperative-business activity, representing the interests of consumer cooperatives; and by developing consumer rights activity, acting as an association of consumers and users.

It brings together 196 cooperatives from various sectors, ranging from food distribution and electricity distribution to health, culture and leisure, among others.

The Red de Redes de Economía Alternativa y Solidaria (REAS) was created in 1995 to promote and develop the solidarity economy in Spain. The REAS is a confederation network made up of 15 regional networks and 4 sector-specific networks, which bring together more than 50,000 people in 944 organisations and companies.

The main mission of REAS is to develop the solidarity economy within the framework of a Charter of Principles agreed upon by all the members, which calls for the development of an economy that puts people at the centre, understanding it as a means and not as an end. An economy that serves people and communities. REAS therefore encourages the creation of alternatives to the current economic model and promotes sustainable, fair and participatory development.

The Unión Española de Cooperativas de Enseñanza (UECOE), legally constituted in 1989, is the only representative body at state level for educational centres with the legal status of education cooperatives.

UECOE's mission is to represent the cooperative education movement in all possible forums, to maintain good relations with business and trade union organisations in the sector, and to promote the cooperative education movement. One of its main aims is to develop a pedagogical overhaul in accordance with the social and economic principles of the cooperative movement Its objectives therefore include:

  • To foster the cooperative spirit and manage appropriate actions.
  • To represent and defend the common interests of the member cooperative entities.
  • To promote co-operative studies and experiences by publishing works of this nature, contributing to co-operative dissemination and education.
  • Representation in the bodies of the cooperative movement and before administrative bodies.

At present, UECOE brings together approximately 600 teaching cooperatives and social economy educational centres, with some 13,495 worker-member cooperative members and some 13,200 contracted workers in the cooperatives and social economy educational centres.

The Unión Nacional de Cooperativas del Mar (UNACOMAR), as well as representing all the Spanish Sea Co-operatives before the Administration and defending their common interests, is integrated in other higher level organisations such as CEPES, COPA-COGECA and MEDISAMAK, forming part of their Boards of Directors. Their aim is to help those involved in the fishing sector, advising and working as interlocutors for a better and more sustainable future for the sector.

UNACOMAR currently has a total of 36 associate members and has promoted over 200 projects in its 82 years of experience, helping a total of 3,680 clients.
