If you are thinking of starting up your own business, it is important to be aware that it is compulsory to pay tax on your income to the tax authorities and to pay social security contributions. It is possible that, in addition to these two procedures, you may have to complete some other administrative procedures. We explain step by step how to do it and provide useful information.

The first step is to file Form 036 (complete form) or Form 037 (simplified form) online or in person by making an appointment on the Tax Agency website.

    On this form you will indicate:
  • Your personal data
  • Starting date of the activity
  • The Economic Activities Tax (IAE) is a section that you have to indicate with a code that appears in this list
  • And the tax obligations of that IAE. Although it is a compulsory procedure, most self-employed persons are exempt from paying IAE.

Registration with Social Security

This procedure must be carried out electronically. You can do this on the Importass Portal if you have an electronic certificate, permanent Cl@ve, Cl@ve PIN or via SMS. If you do not have an online identification method, please apply here. During the procedure, it is compulsory to choose a mutual insurance company to cover occupational contingencies, temporary incapacity or cessation of activity.

    To register you will need:
  • Your Social Insurance Number (NUSS)
  • Your ID
  • Date of commencement of activity and addresso
  • IAE
  • Bank account number
